Poppy Appeal launch a rousing success

SCORES of people gathered in Henley on Saturday for the launch of this year's Poppy Appeal.

Mayor Martin Akehurst bought the first poppy from John Green, chairman of the Henley and Peppard branch of the Royal British Legion, watched by appeal organiser Shirley Lees.

The launch was marked by a performance by Sam Brown’s International Ukulele Club and singer and songwriter Naomi Vallance.

Councillor Akehurst helped to distribute poppy trays and collection tins to businesses, cafés, schools and pubs.

House-to-house collections are taking place daily until November 8 and there will be street collections on November 7 and 8 with the help of the Henley cadet groups.
