“AS fewer and fewer people have any direct memory of either the First or Second World War, the need for all to be remembered as the terrible tragedy of war, and indeed of man’s inhumanity to man, is surely as great as ever.

The wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and now Syria underline this vividly.

The annual season of remembrance when we wear poppies reminds us of both our relations who have fallen in war and those many others who still lose their lives on our behalf.”
