Council may take over graveyard maintenance

A CHURCHYARD in Benson could become the responsibility of the parish council.

A CHURCHYARD in Benson could become the responsibility of the parish council.

Benson New Churchyard, on the east side of Church Road, is currently maintained by the parochial church council but Councillor Don Fletcher believes the parish council should take it over.

He came up with the idea after discovering that the cemetery in Shropshire where his mother is buried is maintained by a parish council.

He said: “The graveyard is marvellous and spotless. It’s a lovely little cemetery and it includes RAF graves as well.”

Cllr Fletcher’s proposal is supported by the church council. The parish council currently gives the church council a grant towards the maintenance, which includes grass cutting, clearing vegetation and trimming hedges.

Cllr Fletcher, who occasionally attends services at St Helen’s Church, added: “As far as I’m concerned, it’s a good idea. The parish council has money and it would mean the church didn’t have to find the money.”

Council chairman Jon Fowler said the costs and requirements needed more detailed research. This will be carried out by the council’s lands committee.
