A NEW rector for Caversham and Mapledurham has been appointed.

The Rev Mike Smith will take over as parish priest for St Peter’s, Caversham, St Margaret’s, Mapledurham and St John the Baptist, Caversham, in March.

He became a priest 18 years ago and worked in parishes in Manchester until 2005 when he was appointed chaplain and policy advisor to the Bishop of Leicester, who is lead spokesman for the Church of England.

Rev Smith is married to Rachel, who is also a priest with her own parish in Loughborough, and they have two sons, aged six and three.

He said: “I have been struck by the openness shown, the broad and inclusive outlook, symbolised by three values of inclusive, generous and life-giving.”
