£140,000 raised for church refurbishment

FUND-RAISERS have collected enough money to begin renovating a Wargrave church.

FUND-RAISERS have collected enough money to begin renovating a Wargrave church.

A total of £140,000 has been raised since the start of November to pay for refurbishment of St Mary’s in Station Road, including a sound system and crèche as well as a new seating plan.

Central heating has already been installed in the 700-year-old church as part of the 21st Century Project, which was launched last year by the Parochial Church Council.

Appeal co-ordinator Bob Austen said: “Donations have been coming in thick and fast and I’m delighted to announce that £140,000 has been pledged so far.

“Some of the work has already been done, such as the central heating, and there will be plans put in place now to do the work on the baptistry and woodwork. There’s still quite a lot to do but it’s better to do it in a planned way.

“Most of the donations have been from within the church family but we are trying to target people from the community because the church is a place that everybody will need at some point in their lives.

“We want it there for future generations but can only do that if we keep it up to date. The biggest donation was £25,000 but frankly we are grateful for donations of any size.”

The church council will continue fund-raising for a £350,000 annexe, which will provide a meeting place for village and church groups that currently use the small Hannen Room.

The plans were approved by English Heritage in November.

A planning application is due to be submitted to Wokingham Borough Council early next year.

Mr Austen said: “We are confident it will go through because English Heritage has agreed it.”

To make a donation, send a cheque, made out to the church, to: St Mary’s Church, Mill Green, Wargrave, Berkshire, RG10 8EU.
