Village lunch club marks 30th birthday

MEMBERS of Sonning Common Lunch Club were given a free meal to mark its 30th anniversary.

Fourteen volunteers cooked lunch for 39 people at the village hall with a pudding consisting of a slice of birthday cake.

Freda Buckner, who runs the club, said: “The lunch went very well and everyone enjoyed their meal.

“We have a nice crew of ladies who cook the food, lay the tables and make sure everything runs very smoothly. We couldn’t do it without them.”

The club provides lunch for up to 50 people once a month. Over the years, it has used different venues, including Chiltern Edge School. It moved to the village hall in 2009.

Mrs Buckner, one of the original helpers who launched the club in 1985 and took charge in 1990, said: “We had periods when there were only about three of us cooking but we kept it going.

“I didn’t think it would still be going 30 years later but I’ve always thought I would like to carry on with it for as long as possible.

“For some people it’s the only time they go out so it’s nice for them to be able to meet people.”
