Parishioners honour priest on his retirement

A SERVICE was held to mark the retirement of the rector of Rotherfield Peppard.

A SERVICE was held to mark the retirement of the rector of Rotherfield Peppard.

Rev Canon Graham Foulis Brown stood down last month after 25 years as vicar of Kidmore End and Sonning Common. The benefice was extended to include Peppard in 2002.

Rt Rev Colin Fletcher, acting Bishop of Oxford, presided over the service at St John the Baptist Church in Kidmore End, which was attended by about 170 parishioners.

Afterwards the rector was presented with a cake with icing models of each church in the benefice — All Saints in Peppard, Christ the King in Sonning Common and St John the Baptist — and a framed picture of all three.

Susan Cooper, associate priest at the Kidmore End church, said: “It was a lovely send-off. He was given a desk for his new home in Newbury and some other mementos. People from the congregation created a memories book which we hope will give him pleasure.

“He had been there a long time and people came from far and wide to honour him and thank him for all he has been to them, whether that’s a listening ear or a councillor. He was here so long he has married people, baptised their babies and then married those babies.”
