Choir festival raises £1,300 for Macmillan

ORGANISERS of Henley’s fifth choir festival presented a cheque for more than £1,300 to cancer charity Macmillan.

About 150 people attended the event at St Mary’s Church in Hart Street in January in which more than 120 singers from 13 choirs took part.

The soloists were Rebecca Bell and Marion Olsen and the choirs were conducted by Dr Jonathan White, director of music at St Mary’s. David Old played the organ.

Participants and audience members paid £5 to attend, raising a total of £1,362 including gift aid.

Elizabeth Hodgkin, who revived the festival in 2009, said: “The idea is to showcase local church choirs and get as many people as possible from the community involved. We rehearse in the afternoon and perform in the evening. We actually sing from the pews with the audience all around us, which works really well.”
