Church deacon thanked for long service

A CHURCH deacon has celebrated 20 years of service in Sonning Common.

Francis Andrews, 83, of Woodlands Road, has been the parish deacon at St Michael’s Church in Peppard Road since 1994.

During a surprise lunch to mark the anniversary, he was presented with a book containing the writings of the Fathers of the Church. He also received a cake and a thank-you card signed by many well-wishers.

Brian Theobold, a member of the church, said: “During his ministry, Francis has been particularly active in visiting the sick and housebound of the parish. He has also played an important role in establishing and maintaining links between St Michael’s Church and the other Christian communities in the Sonning Common area.”

Mr Andrews, a retired consultant physician, has lived in the village since 1966.
