Chorister celebrates 60 years

A MAN will celebrate 60 years of singing in church choirs with a diamond jubilee choral evensong at St Peter’s Church in Caversham on Sunday.

Michael Rose first joined a church choir at St John the Evangelist in Barnet in September 1954, when he was 10, and went on to become head chorister.

He joined the choir at Llandaff Cathedral as an alto while working in Cardiff and then Cape Town Cathedral during a brief period in South Africa before he settled at St Stephen’s, Ealing, in 1967.

When he and his wife Margaret moved to Caversham in the late Seventies, Mr Rose joined the St Peter’s choir.

In 1985, he organised a charity Psalmathon in which all 150 psalms were sung, non-stop, in 12 hours with the help of four organists and four back-up choirs.
