Difficult choices to make

REV Christopher Evans, the rector of Watlington, says the development would secure the future of St Leonard’s Church.

In a letter to this week’s Henley Standard, he dismisses calls for the site to be used for a new community hall or left as a sort of nature reserve and says he takes exception “when misinformation is bandied about by those who really should know better”.

Rev Evans continues: “While I appreciate that not everybody has the same interest as I do in seeing the church thrive as a place of worship, I would have thought that many people would, nevertheless, still wish to see its future ensured as a continuing part of Watlington’s ever-changing history.

“Because the church has ‘always’ been there does not mean that it always will be and, quite frankly, neither a pie-in-the-sky community hall nor an open-space nature reserve is going to secure the church’s future. That is why difficult choices have had to be made and difficult decisions taken.”
