HE was the ultimate Bond villain, fighting against MI6, in 2021’s No Time to Die and now the tables are turned as Rami Malek plays introverted CIA decoder and surveillance expert Charlie Heller in revenge thriller The Amateur (12A), released at the Regal Picturehouse in Henley today (Friday).
While he is working in America, his wife is killed in a terrorist attack in London. When his bosses refuse to get involved, he goes on a one-man mission across the globe to find those who did it.
Directed by James Hawes, who also directed the first six episodes of Slow Horses, the film’s cast also includes Laurence Fishburne, Julianne Nicholson and Michael Stuhlbarg. It has a running time of about two hours.
Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche star in The Return (15), a retelling of the ancient Greek poet Homer’s story The Odyssey by director Uberto Pasolini.
Odysseus (Fiennes), the king of Ithaca, returns home, broken by the loss of all his men in the Trojan War a decade earlier.
His wife, Penelope (Binoche), is held captive by men vying for the role of king and their son’s life is threatened. Odysseus has to face the past to battle for his position. The film has a running time of about two hours.
One to One: John and Yoko (15), a documentary by Kevin Macdonald and Sam Rice-Edwards, focuses on when John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono were first making New York City their home. It has a running time of one hour, 41 minutes.
One-off screenings include a rendering of the Easter story in The Chosen: The Last Supper Part 1 (12A), André Rieu’s 75th Birthday Celebration (PG) and a relaxed screening of The Stimming Pool (12A), a film created by neurodivergent filmmakers, giving their view on living in a world made for the neurotypical.
Continuing are A Minecraft Movie (PG), Mr Burton (12A) and SIX The Musical Live! (12A).
