Hail Kidman, full of grace

GRACE KELLY was 26 when she left Hollywood to live in Monaco as wife of Prince Rainier III.

There is no doubt that beautiful Australian actress Nicole Kidman is incredibly young for her years, but she is 46, two decades older than the lady she’s playing, which is problem number one with this movie. A fluffy, candy floss script is problem number two. The critics have panned it, Cannes has turned its nose up at it, and Kidman herself — a seasoned actress who turned out a breath-taking performance as the plain and mentally disturbed Virginia Woolfe in The Hours — has refused to read the negative reports in the Sydney Morning Herald.

For those who adored Kelly and are in love with the glamour of the Fifties and Sixties, however, none of this will really matter. The action centres on Kelly’s move to Monaco and the political struggles that ensued between the principality and France. The prince is played by Tim Roth, and Frank Langella as her priest confidant puts in a good performance.
