A NIGHT at the cinema remains one of the UK’s most popular forms of entertainment, enjoyed by millions each year, writes Matthew Wilson.
But as we settle into our comfy seats at the Henley Regal Picturehouse, do any of us have much of an idea how the images on the screen are produced?
Most people have heard of CGI — computer-generated imagery — and nearly everyone has an idea of how cameras work, even if (like your correspondent’s) it’s only a vague one.
But with whole books dedicated to the subject, it’s safe to say that when it comes to the question of how films achieve their effects, most cinemagoers would draw a blank — even if they know blanks are used in movie firearms.
With that in mind, a bunch of film industry specialists have got together to explain how some of the magic happens.
The Hollywood Special Effects Show is a brand new interactive and explosive family production that takes audiences behind the scenes of their favourite movies to see how incredible special effects are created for the screen.
Join a team of professionals who’ve been behind the special effects on a vast range of productions including Game of Thrones, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Dark Knight Rises and The Phantom of the Opera.
They’ll be exposing the trade secrets to creating movie magic and giving a revealing insight into some of the most spectacular scenes in Hollywood.
For families and movie buffs alike, you will feel the heat from spectacular explosions, get up close with gruesome sci-fi monsters, be blown away by apocalyptic weather and possibly star in your own high-octane stunt sequence.
This is a dangerously exciting theatrical experience like no other.
The Hollywood Special Effects Show is coming to coming to the Hexagon in Reading on Sunday, September 27, followed a month later by the Wycombe Swan on Monday, October 26.
Tickets are priced £17.50 (Reading) and £16.50 (Wycombe) with concessions and family tickets available.
