Midnight’s Children (12A)

Midnight’s Children (12A)

Starring: Satya Bhabha, Shahana Goswami, Anita Majumdar, Charles Dance

Well-bred Shiva and beggar’s child Saleem are swapped in the maternity hospital by a politically motivated but naive nurse. The two boys’ separate but overlapping destinies are complicated by Saleem’s telepathic powers.

This adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s epic novel was considered unfilmable but director Deepa Mehta has proved his critics wrong. Some exceptional performances.

Kids’ Club — Tangled (PG)

Starring: Zacher y Levi, Mandy Moore

Disney’s 50th animated feature is this brand new take on the classic story of Rapunzel. A dashing thief promises to show the trapped princess the world — if he can find his stolen loot first.

Tangled is as much fun as any of the previous 49 Disney animations. The kids will love it.

Life of Pi (PG)

MET Opera: Les Troyens

Starring: Deborah Voigt, Susan Graham, Marcello Giordani, and Dwayne Croft lead the cast of the Met Opera ensemble

This is a rare opportunity to witness Berlioz’s vast epic, last performed at the Met in 2003, portraying characters from the Trojan War. Met principal conductor Fabio Luisi marshals the large-scale musical forces.

This is a special festive treat for opera lovers.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (12A)

Starring: Martin Freeman, Sir Ian McKellen and Richard Armitage

A curious Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, journeys to the Lonely Mountain with a vigorous group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure stolen from them by the dragon Smaug.

Hotly-anticipated film directed by Peter Jackson. Sure to satisfy all Tolkien buffs.

Starring: Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan and Adil Hussain

Adapted from the Man Booker prize-winning novel by Yann Martel, this is the story of one man’s spiritual journey in a lifeboat with only a man-eating tiger for company.

Directed by Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) this film is attracting rave reviews and is tipped as an award-winner in the upcoming season.
