VENICE, the popular tourist destination that is ranked as the most beautiful city in the world, was Major Paul Whittle’s subject when he visited Henley u3a in November as part of their monthly talks programme.
Maj Whittle showed pictures of the UNESCO world heritage site and explained how the 6 billion euro MOSE project utilises mobile gates at the main entry points to the lagoon to protect the city from flooding.
He went on to show how from the 13th century onwards Venice became a maritime commercial empire after establishing trading posts along the Adriatic, around the Greek coast and even as far east as Cyprus.
Profits from their global ventures enabled Venetian families to build magnificent palaces along the Grand Canal.
Venice started to decline in the 15th century after the Ottomans fought back to protect their own trading routes. Venetian power finally dwindled when European countries turned west to more profitable opportunities in the Americas.
Henley u3a is open to all retired people in Henley and surrounding areas. For a modest annual fee, members can develop new interests and meet like-minded people.
There are currently about 25 active groups together with sporting activities, walks and coffee mornings.
The programme of monthly talks is open to non-members. These are held in the parish hall of the Sacred Heart Church. Parking is off Walton Avenue.
This month’s art talk was based on the work of Graham Sutherland, Ivon Hitchens and John Piper.
