WE met at Badgemore Park Golf Club on Tuesday, March 11 when the speaker was Philip Nugus and his subject was “The story behind the making of the Bafta shortlisted, 13-part TV series Churchill’s Bodyguard”.
The speaker was introduced by Ian Black, who said that Philip had produced a variety of films on TV, mainly about the two world wars.
He had produced more than 900 programmes and had been offered the material about Churchill’s bodyguard, Walter Thompson.
The subject of the programmes was Inspector Walter Thompson, a former post office messenger.
Thompson had a chance encounter with Churchill at the Siege of Sidney Street, when Churchill was Home Secretary and before Thompson had joined the Metropolitan Police.
