AT the April meeting, retiring president Bob de Board gave a light-hearted account of his lifetime’s involvement with Mr Toad and the other characters in Wind in the Willows.
The title of his talk was “Beyond the Wild Wood; Mr Toad and ME!”
He was introduced to the meeting by president-elect Ian Black, who said that he would tell us three things about Bob that we did not know.
One was that Bob did his National Service in the WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force).
On closer examination, this proved to be the RWAAF (Royal West African Frontier Force) with whom Bob served for a year as a subaltern.
