A FOOTBALL club is to attempt to set a world record by hosting a five-a-side match with the largest number of players.
The current record is 460 so Rotherfield United is to field 500 players on a rotation basis. Each player will be involved for about 25 minutes and the match in Gallowstree Common is expected to take 24 hours.
Club chairman Andy Davies said: “It should be good fun and it will get everyone in our club involved and hopefully some other local teams too.”
He said he came up with the idea while researching football records. “I thought this was manageable because it is just organising people and getting them on the pitch whereas the record for the longest game of football is 46 hours.”
The record attempt, which must be verified by the Guinness Book of World Records, will take place on the weekend of May 18 and 19.
It is part of the club’s fund-raising programme for its new £60,000 clubhouse and coincides with its 40th anniversary celebrations.
Players can be any age above five and of any standard. The entry fee is £10 but anyone who raises more for the club does not have to pay the fee.
Anyone who raises more than £25 will be presented with a special “world record holder” T-shirt and the person who raises the most money will win a pair of tickets to either the Charity Shield or the FA Cup Final next year. To sign up, visit www.rotherfieldfc.com
