Library to keep hours

RESIDENTS are happy with Benson library’s opening hours, according to a survey.

RESIDENTS are happy with Benson library’s opening hours, according to a survey.

About nine per cent of the library’s regular 1,300 visitors responded to the Friends of Benson Library survey conducted at the end of last year.

Dave Rushton, chairman of the Friends, said: “The survey found that it would be possible to trim a half-hour here or there without really affecting the service. We could perhaps open a bit later, say, 9.30am instead of 9am, which would add up across the week.

“To our surprise, there was no great enthusiasm for another afternoon, although we are open only four afternoons a week and that is when the library is at its busiest.”

Mr Rushton said the result of the survey was good news considering volunteers would have to help staff the library once it loses half of its staff funding in cuts agreed by Oxfordshire County Council.

Representatives from the library are due to meet with council officials next month.
