£40,000 appeal for new minibus

A SUPPORT service in Sonning Common needs to raise more than £40,000 for a new minibus.

A SUPPORT service in Sonning Common needs to raise more than £40,000 for a new minibus.

The vehicle, which will replace an older minibus, will include wheelchair access and air suspension as well as two additional seats.

It will be used to take vulnerable residents in Sonning Common, Peppard, Kidmore End, Gallowstree Common and Binfield Heath to hospital and other appointments.

Chairman Fred Nickson said the service was used almost every weekday. He added: “I had to promise a lot of the ladies that the current minibus isn’t made of concrete because the suspension was so hard.”

The service, which has been running for 33 years and is based at the village hall, has 80 volunteers who make 1,200 trips each year.

They also visit residents who can’t leave their house and take others on shopping trips and mystery tea tours.

Mr Nickson, from Peppard, said: “The service is so important because it does so much within the community.

“For some people, the highlight of their week is to go to Tesco on a Monday because they don’t have the chance to go anywhere.”

Mr Nickson said the service is “desperate” for volunteer drivers and needs more sponsors for the minibus, which it is looking to purchase in October.
