Treble triumph in skiff regatta

WARGRAVE Boating Club took a hat-trick of victories at the eighth annual Skiff Racing Association regatta last weekend.

WARGRAVE Boating Club took a hat-trick of victories at the eighth annual Skiff Racing Association regatta last weekend.

The club won the gents’ junior doubles and novice restricted doubles, as well as the ladies’ novice restricted singles at Henley Sailing Club on Saturday.

The annual contest is run entirely by volunteers, and saw five visiting clubs, Dittons Skiff and Punting Club, Thames Valley Skiff Club, Wraysbury Skiff and Punting Club, Sunbury Skiff and Punting Club and The Skiff Club from Teddington, Middlesex, compete over the 500m course.

A total of 74 competitors took part in 50 races as 24 different events were contested, with rowers aged from 14 up to 76 among those battling it out.

WBC victories came through Hal Stephenson and Dan Watson in the junior doubles, coxed by Judith Stephenson, while Nick Pierro, Jon Drake and cox Katie Blades took the honours in the novice restricted doubles. Susanna Hanks took the ladies’ novice restricted title.

Beverley Davies, who organised the event, said: “Our regatta has become the highlight of the skiff racing calendar because of its beautiful setting and friendly atmosphere, leading it to have the most races of any regatta this season. This year was bigger than ever and all the clubs love coming here.

“Throughout the season there are a number of regattas hosted by all the clubs. The rowers compete for Ormiston points and the team with the most points at the end of the season wins the trophy.”

For those interested in learning to skiff, Wargrave Boating Club holds a seven-week course for new members in May. New members can also attend the club’s open day each April, where they can sign up for courses in rowing, punting and kayaking.
