Swimmers raise £4,000 at Swimarathon

MORE than 140 swimmers took part in the Henley Lions Swimarathon on Saturday

MORE than 140 swimmers took part in the Henley Lions Swimarathon on Saturday.

They swam a total of 1,998 lengths of the 20m pool at LA Fitness in Newtown Road, which was provided free of charge for the annual charity event.

Henley Mayor Martin Akehurst attened the event to cheer on the swimmers along with 21 Lions.

Almost £4,000 was raised which will be split between the charities of the teams involved and Lions charities.

There were 22 teams including ones from St Mary?s School, Shiplake scouts, Mencap and Valley Road and Trinity primary schools.

Trinity had 55 pupils taking part in eight teams. Teams from St Mary?s and Valley Road completed the most lengths, each with 118, in their 45-minute slots.

Mel Williams, president of Henley Lions Club, said: ?The lanes were in use 95 per cent of the time and that is important because it means more good contributions towards the total.

?I would like to thank LA Fitness for letting us use the pool for nothing.

?We look forward to another successful event next year.?

Liz Brent, who ran the event, said: ?The children love it. They all say, ?we really enjoyed it ? see you next year?.?

She said the Lions? share of the money would go to a local children?s charity.
