JOHN GROUT has been made club president.

JOHN GROUT has been made club president.

Mr Grout, 81, of Upton Close, Henley, succeeded Barry Prior with a formal handover at Henley Golf Club, where the club usually meets.

He joined the club in 2003 and was previously president in 2006/07.

Mr Grout said he felt honoured to be chosen.

“The club felt they wanted somebody who knew he ropes,” he said.

“I’m pleased because the first time you feel a bit nervous and unsure but now I’m one of the senior  members.

“The club has been consolidating for the last two years. My aim is to push it forward and encourage Henley people to consider joining New Rotary members can bring focus and we would encourage that.”

Mr Prior said: “I’m passing on to a very safe pair of hands and I can see the club going from strength to strength under John.

“We have had a good group of community chairmen throughout the year and I think we have probably broken the mould by starting to meet in the centre of  Henley.”

The club raised more than £3,000 at its jazz evening in April, he said.
