Women won't duck issue of organ donation

MEMBERS of Sonning Common WI knitted 100 yellow ducks in support of a campaign to raise awareness of organ donation.

MEMBERS of Sonning Common WI knitted 100 yellow ducks in support of a campaign to raise awareness of organ donation.

The soft toys were given out at the group?s monthly coffee morning at the village hall on Monday.

Sue Hedges, secretary of the group, led the project, which is being backed by the WI nationally.

She said: ?The Little Yellow Duck Project was started in memory of Clare Cookland, who passed away, aged 26. She needed a lung transplant but no donor could be found.

?We want to encourage people to talk about organ donation and know what your family?s wishes are.? During Monday?s event WI members Gill Hayward, Beverley Porteous, Jane Handley and Christine Gibson knitted more ducks. Mrs Hedges, 68, from Gallowstree Common, said: ?I have done about 15 myself. They?re not too difficult to knit.

?The idea is they?re left in a pub, restaurant, library or bus ? it could be anywhere. Then you hope people find them and it increases awareness about organ donation. It?s not to raise money, they aren?t sold. It?s about publicity and awareness.

?We?ve used two designs for our ducks which we got instructions for off the charity?s website.?
