Henley Rotary Club gala concert

A JAZZ concert organised by the club at Christ Church in Henley raised £3,000.

A JAZZ concert organised by the club at Christ Church in Henley raised £3,000.

More than 100 people enjoyed a performance by saxophonist Ken Fitt, a former headteacher at Chiltern Edge School in Sonning Common, and his band.

The event also featured singer Wendy Clark, from Ipsden, and professional vibraphonist Alan Grahame.

The band played trad and Dixieland standards such as

When The Saints Go Marching In
while Wendy’s set included

Summertime
by George Gershwin.

The proceeds will be shared between several good causes in the area.

President John Grout said: “It went magnificently and lots of people have asked us to repeat it. I recommended it to a lot of people and they came up afterwards, saying ‘you were right — the band were incredible’.

“It was like having a top-class London performance right here in Henley.”

The annual concert was launched in 1960 and used to be called the Midnight Matinée but is now the Charity Gala Concert.

Mr Grout said: “We’ve had to rename it because too many people thought it happened at midnight and that would be too late for them.

“I had to spend so much time explaining it that we decided to bring the name up to date.”
