Henley Ladies Probus Club

THE 232nd meeting was held at Badgemore Park Golf Club in December.

THE 232nd meeting was held at Badgemore Park Golf Club in December.

The chairman welcomed all the members, especially our president Pat Burton on her first visit back since her illness. Pat thanked everyone for her cards and the lovely plant she had received.

Members were informed of the death of Barbara Goodall, a former member of the club who had moved away.

The golf club is in the process of arranging for a lift to be installed, which will help our members who have difficulty with the steep stairs and will also be an asset to the club for all its other functions, such as weddings, during the year.

Heather Clark gave notice of an outing organised by the men’s Probus Club to the Watermill Theatre in Newbury on February 17 to see the Andrew Lloyd Webber production of Tell Me on a Sunday.

The minutes of the November meeting were read, approved and signed.

With no other business, the chairman introduced the speaker, Tony King, who gave us a wonderful talk entitled “Another opening, another show”.

His talk took us right back to the start of musicals, both in film and on the stage, including the history of how lighting developed, how The Beggar’s Opera covered the way life was lived at the time and how dancing developed.

To add to the enjoyment there were many interesting snippets from the various authors and composers about how they learnt their craft as musicals became bigger and better.

The talk was accompanied by lively and familiar soundtracks from the various shows going right back to Paul Robeson in Showboat and Annie Get your Gun.

Tony also pointed out that Les Misérables, the most popular musical of all time, was panned by the critics at its first showing. To end the talk he showed us a clip from Les Misérables.

This was the perfect talk for the Christmas meeting and no one wanted it to end. There were smiles on the faces of all members. Wonderful.

Pam Richardson gave the vote of thanks.

At the lunch the chef and staff were thanked for their year’s hard work and gratuities were given.

The next meeting will be on Thursday, January 14 when we will have a talk by Gill Davies called “A tour around Venice”, studying the art and the history.
