AT the end of last year we held our third Almost Christmas Show at Woodclyffe Hall in Wargrave.

More than 100 beavers, cubs, scouts, parents and villagers enjoyed an hour of entertainment, including comedy sketches and songs, and everyone joined in with the singing of festive carols.

The evening started with some special awards.

Nathan Walsh, 14, a senior patrol leader in the scout section, was presented with the chief scout gold award and a signed certificate from chief scout Bear Grylls by Nige Board, the scout section leader.

Nige explained that everyone at Wargrave scouts was very excited that Nathan had achieved this award as no else had reached this standard for a number of years. The troop was looking forward to more young people attaining the award in the near future.

Scouting offers a varied programme of indoor and outdoor activities, including camping, hiking, cooking, creative and community activities. This enables every scout to attempt to achieve this highest level of merit in scouting.

Nathan has diligently had a go at everything during his three years with the troop, completing challenging tasks to a high standard.

Nathan was also awarded a gift from Mark Ballard, district commissioner for Loddon District Scouts, who commented that the gold award is given to only a handful of scouts across the district each year.

Group scout leader Pete Fry also presented Nige Board with a gift in recognition of his 30 years’ service and as a leaving present from the troop in appreciation of his significant commitment to scouting in Wargrave. Nige has recently been appointed Berkshire’s assistant county commissioner for scouts.

The evening ended with seasonal mulled wine and mince pies. A total of £250 was raised and donated to Twyford children’s charity Daisy’s Dream.

2016 is a very exciting year for the village scout troop. In July 12 boys and girls and four leaders will take part in an international jamboree in Finland.
