I AM sure that everyone is aware that last month was one of the hottest Junes on record, writes Denis Gilbert, from Shiplake.
Temperatures ranged from 7C overnight to 31C on the hottest day. Most daytime temperatures were in the mid to high twenties and the mean for the month was 18C, 3C above the average for June and a half a degree higher than in June 1976.
What little rain we had in Shiplake (16mm) seemed to leave the ground as hard as before the two showers.
Henley fared better with 38mm and Reading University recorded more than 53mm.
Keep watering those bedding plants. Hosepipes spring to mind but perhaps we should stick to watering cans.
