Proof we need our cash machines

Visitors keen to spend their money in Henley were left queuing on Saturday at the only cash machine in the town centre.

At noon, there was a long queue outside Sainsbury’s, likely to be people wanting to get to the Rewind Festival by river taxi, which only took cash.

The demise of cash is a sign of the times or, as Calvin Harris said: “It was acceptable in the 80s.” — Yours faithfully,

Sir — I agree with your correspondent Martin Akehurst that it would be good to have a cash machine at the Henley Waitrose store (Standard, August 18).

After all, they have them in some other branches.

It’s something I’ve been thinking myself for some time, so I was spurred by the letter to email Waitrose and suggest it.

The response was neither yes nor no but that they would pass the idea on to the relevant department.

You never know, if enough people request it, they might seriously consider it. — Yours faithfully,
