Church fete raises £3,000 despite being moved indoors

ABOUT 200 people visited the anual summer fete at St Leonard’s Church in Watlington on Saturday.

ABOUT 200 people visited the anual summer fete at St Leonard’s Church in Watlington on Saturday.

The event had to be held indoors due to the rain but still raised £3,000, which will go towards the upkeep of the Grade II listed building.

There was a range of stalls selling cards, books, toys, bric-a-brac and crafts as well as a barbecue, cakes and teas. The Watlington Concert Band entertained the visitors, who included Henley MP John Howell.

Associate priest Rev Angie Paterson said: “To be honest, it was much better than we expected. It was a rainy day and people sort of drifted through.

“People were coming and going but still spending their money, which was great.

“You just accept the weather and make the best of it and everybody rose to the occasion.

“The fete is a great opportunity to bring everybody together and that’s actually quite an important part of it.”
