Top flight

Air Vice-Marshal Richard Knighton, the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff, presented 31 medals and two

Air Vice-Marshal Richard Knighton, the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff, presented 31 medals and two commendations to RAF Benson personnel at a special ceremony in the officers’ mess. Twenty-four Operational Service Medals with Afghanistan Clasp were awarded to: Fl Lts Paul Carlon, Steve Mills and Richard Minns; Flt Sgt Kevin Jones; Chief Technician Nicholas Larkin; Sgts Peter MacDougall, Scott MacLennan and Russell Vickers, Cpls Lois Coulson, David Hansford, Donald Nicholls, Stu Tanton and Garrick Weston; Senior Aircraftmen Michelle Allen, Kathryn Arney, Jack Cowley, Sam Currie, Mariette Erasmus, Laura Herron, Matthew Lovelady, Simon Mason, Kyle Moses, Callum Owen and Shaun Webb. The Accumulated Campaign Service Medal, awarded to those who have completed 720 days of qualifying deployments, was presented to Sgt Matthew Andrews. The Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, awarded in recognition of long service with irreproachable character and conduct over 15 years’ reckonable service, was presented to Sgts Mark Copperwheat and Christopher Smith and Cpls Donald Nicholls and Lawrence Southwick. The Clasp to the Long Service and Good Conduct, which is awarded for a further 15 years exemplary service, was presented to Master Aircrewman David Fudge and Fl Sgt David McCrindle. The Personal Commendation of the Deputy Commander Air Command was presented to mechanical engineer Cpl Colin Dickens for his noteworthy contributions to the Puma 2 engineering community as well as his outstanding leadership of the RAF Benson Community First Responders. The Personal Commendation of Commander Joint Helicopter Command was presented to photographer Senior Aircraftman Connor Payne for exceptional professionalism and his reinvigoration of the Scouting Association’s Explorers unit at RAF Benson.
