Festival of boats opens today

MORE than 180 boats of all shapes and sizes will be on show at this year’s Thames Traditional Boat Festival which starts today (Friday).

MORE than 180 boats of all shapes and sizes will be on show at this year’s Thames Traditional Boat Festival which starts today (Friday).

Rowing skiffs and punts, Venetian gondolas, slipper launches and a fleet of more than 20 Dunkirk Little Ships will take to the river over the weekend.

The festival takes place at Fawley Meadows from noon today and all day on Saturday and Sunday.

It will see a return visit of the Second World War torpedo boat MTB 102 and new for this year – First World War torpedo boat CMB9 and RAF Second World War launch ST1502.

The popular Queen’s row barge Gloriana will also be on display once again.

More than 100 vintage and classic vehicles will be on land, as well as military vehicles, and a fleet of more than 20 amphibious craft. The Royal Navy will be present with a land-based display.

Air displays will be held on both Saturday and Sunday, using vintage and wartime aircraft including the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster.

Youngsters will have the chance to go in traditional skiffs and canoes with the Thames Traditional Boat Society as well as enjoy a vintage fairground with rides and stalls for all the family plus ‘pedal planes’ and a flight simulator.
