Fair raises £4,000 for school trip

MORE than £4,000 was raised at this year’s Benson summer fair.

MORE than £4,000 was raised at this year’s Benson summer fair.

The money will go towards new outdoor play equipment and trips for the children at Benson Primary School, which organises the fundraiser.

Jo Whittaker, chairwoman of the Friends of Benson School, said about 1,000 people had visited the fair.

“It was lovely. It went really well but that was due to the amount of help and support from staff and families. We’re the school that’s running it but it’s a community event,” she said. “Its the most money we have ever raised in one function. We always want more but we’re completely delighted. We’re doing some big projects at school next year.”

The event was held on the playing fields off Oxford Road and the day featured an inflatable obstacle course, penalty shoot-out, judo demonstration and rowing challenge. The Roke and Benson Brass Band entertained the crowds.

There was face-painting by children from Wallingford School and the Nasio Trust, a charity which works with vulnerable children and the communities of western Kenya, as well as a barbecue, with meat provided by Benson Village Butchers, a pop-up café from Tea Vintage, and a cake stall
