Cyclist’s milestone challenge

A MAN from Sonning Common is celebrating his 50th birthday by cycling to Istanbul, in Turkey.

A MAN from Sonning Common is celebrating his 50th birthday by cycling to Istanbul, in Turkey.

Adrian Bird is riding solo for 50 days across 10 European countries to raise money for Autism Berkshire.

He chose his destination by multiplying 50 by 50, then checking which places were 2,500 miles away.

Mr Bird, a painter and decorator, set off on July 7 and the route began with him riding to Dover, before boarding a ferry to Dunkirk and then heading north to Rotterdam in Holland. He will follow the rivers Rhine and Danube to Romania, before crossing Bulgaria to reach his destination. He is camping in a tent along the way.

Mr Bird, who celebrated his birthday last week, has already completed the John O’Groats to Land’s End cycle ride, the Three Peaks Challenge and the Marathon des Sables ultramarathon in the Sahara Desert.

His grandnephew, George, attends Brookfields School in Tilehurst, which specialises in working with autistic children. To donate, visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Adrian-Bird3
