Community fun day hosts bake off

A CAKE baking competition was held at a community fun day in Henley.

A CAKE baking competition was held at a community fun day in Henley.

The winner was Sam Bullock, with her strawberry cakes presented in tea cups.

The competition, which had a theme of “A British summer” was part of an afternoon of activities at Makins recreation vround organised by Gainsborough Residents’ Associaton and Soha Housing on Thursday last week.

There were six entries, including one cake that looked like a Fab ice lolly.

Mrs Bullock’s entry was judged the best by a panel comprising residents’ association chairman David Eggleton, vice-chairwoman Paula Isaac, town councillor Lorraine Hillier and Andrea Bain of Soha Housing.

Mrs Bullock, 39, of Gainsborough Hill, said her cakes had ready-made strawberry jelly and pureed strawberry inside.

“The idea came from cream teas and summer,” she said. “I made them over two days in the evenings.”

Her prize was a £20 voucher to spend at Patisserie Valerie in Market Place. About 150 people attended the event, now in its third year, where attractions included a barbecue, a climbing wall, crafts and face-painting.

Young musicians including Maya Rees, Jake Molloy and Joe Lunnon performed while DJ Ross Duncan, also known as The Stepper, played music.

The afternoon finished with big game of rounders.

Mr Eggleton, a town councillor, said: “It started three years ago and more people come each year.

“It brings people together and gives them a chance to speak to the housing provider and we can tell them about the residents’ association plus the whole thing is free.

“Hopefully there will be more events like this next year — it’s just fun.”

Jacky Logan, resident involvement manager for Soha, said: “For us it’s about getting out and supporting the community.

“It’s important that the event is free. People pay out enough during the summer holidays so it gives everybody a chance to do something for nothing.”
