A WEEKEND beer festival in Watlington has been hailed as a success.

A WEEKEND beer festival in Watlington has been hailed as a success.

The event was held at The Social restaurant and bar, which is on the ground floor of the Watlington Club in High Street and was opened in July by Steve and Vicki Wood. Visitors were offered a choice of 11 ales from the Rebellion, Philsters and Loose Cannon breweries as well as Hitchcox cider and there was a van selling hot snacks, including Vietnamese street food, and a barbecue provided by Calnan Brothers, the town’s butcher.

In the evenings there was live music with the Skalets and Funkline performing on the Saturday and jazz band Creatures of Habit on the Sunday. There were also children’s activities, including a bouncy castle.

Mr and Mrs Wood opened the venue in July as well as continuing to run the Lamb pub in Chalgrove, where they have been for two years. Before that they spent 10 years in France, where Mr Wood managed bars. Mrs Wood, who used to run pubs in London and a restaurant on the Isle of Man, is the chef at The Social.

The couple have said they wanted a venue in a “nice community”. The Social restaurant can seat 24 and there is a separate bar area.
