Members of 60+ club treated to free Christmas lunch

MEMBERS of the Henley 60+ Club had their annual Christmas lunch on Monday.

About 60 people enjoyed a free traditional meal of turkey and all the trimmings followed by Christmas pudding, then mince pies and tea or coffee.

Rosemary Allen, 82, who has been a member of the club since she was 60, was wearing a pair of reindeer antlers for the party.

She said: “I always have Christmas lunch here. I really enjoy it.” Renee Smith, 92, who was with her carer Liz Wells, said: “The club is a great resource and is well-used.

“I wouldn’t necessarily get up, get dressed and make sure I go out without it.”

Pat Crisp, 78, who was there with her friend Audrey Oliver, 79, said: “I come whenever I can. It’s a pleasure.”

Mrs Oliver said: “Everyone’s so friendly. We have a laugh. It’s good to get out and about.”

Brian Bloundele, 89, said: “This is the best place in town. I’ve been coming here for 20 years — it’s my second home.”

Ann Eggleton, 81, said: “It’s a good club. More people should come as they don’t know what they’re missing.”

The meal was sponsored by funeral directors Tomalin & Sons.

Entertainment was provided by children from Badgemore Primary School, who sang carols, and Daisy Smith, who sang Christmas songs.

Town councillor Dave Eggleton, who performed magic tricks, said: “The club is very important. All these people, if they didn’t have this, where would they go? When people are isolated it’s bad for their mental health but here there’s food, music and laughter. It’s a very important part of Henley.”

Gill Dodds, the club’s chairman, said: “If it wasn’t for the town council’s financial support it wouldn’t be here at all. We’re incredibly lucky to have it. Long may it stay. If they had one in every town in the country it would be a good thing.”
