Singer’s prize at Open Mic final

SINGER Totie Southwell won a prize at the national final of the Open Mic UK competition.

She played the piano while performing Holding On, which she wrote, in front of an audience of hundreds at the Birmingham NEC on Saturday.

Miss Southwell, 22, from Aston, was one of 26 acts to perform and although she missed out on the overall award, she received the Future Music Showcase prize in the over-21s category.

She will now have the opportunity to perform in front of some major record labels including Syco, which was founded by X Factor creator Simon Cowell.

Miss Southwell said: “It was really good. I was the last person on so it was really nice to be able to close the show. The room was heaving. It was a full house, a really nice crowd with a great atmosphere. It was definitely one of the biggest crowds I’ve performed in front of.”

“I didn’t win first, second or third place but I did win the Future Music Showcase award, which means I will get to perform in front of labels like Sony and Syco.

“That’s really exciting and something I’m really looking forward to.”

Thirty-three friends and family made the trip to support her.

Miss Southwell added: “It was a lovely experience and it will be good to see what happens at the next stage.”
