School shuts early in snow... with more on the way

PUPILS were sent home when Gillotts School in Henley closed early on Monday due to snow.

The school shut an hour earlier than normal following snow showers during the night and throughout much of the morning and early afternoon. The school said it feared that conditions would deteriorate but the snow stopped falling just as the school closed at 2.30pm.

About 1cm of snow fell, causing traffic to build up in the town centre and on Remenham Hill.

In Sonning Common, volunteers were called out to spread salt on untreated pavements as part of the village’s snow plan. They included Alan Goswell, Robert Helibuth, Steven Byrne, Paul Waterman, Geoffrey Adams, James Watkins and parish councillors Douglas Kedge and Dirk Jones.

Salt was put down in the village centre and outside the shops as well as in Grove Road and Sibella Way, by the health centre and primary school and also in Lea Road towards the Batten House retirement home. There were no reports of any problems elsewhere.

The Met Office is predicting heavy snow today (Friday) with a top temperature of -3C and light snow tomorrow.
