A GOLD badge has been awarded to Michael Porter, honorary chairman of the Wargrave, Twyford and District branch of the RNLI, for long and devoted service.
The badge is the highest-ranking of those issued to shore-based volunteers.
The branch has been in existence since the Fifties and contributes about £10,000 to RNLI funds each year.
An annual car boot sale at the Piggott School generates more than £2,000 and this year it will be held on Sunday, June 9. Mr Porter said he was both delighted and honoured to receive the award. “I have been involved in fund-raising for the RNLI for more than 30 years and the support that we receive from the committee, our local helpers and all who support our events and collections has made all the difference to our success,” he said.
“Our lifeboat stations rely on volunteers to crew the boats and run the stations. The volunteer effort that we enjoy is also essential to keep the service able to fulfil its mission of saving lives at sea.”
To become a volunteer, call Mr Porter on 0118 940 2410.
