Gruelling training regime and calories galore

ROSIE STANCER is being put through a training regime by Standard fitnesscolumnist Richard Hawkins, from the Expert Fitness Studio in Henley.

The training takes places at Henley Rugby Club and in hills above her Hambleden home for up to 12 hours a week.

Mrs Stancer’s exercises include pulling three heavy resistance tyres to mimic the sledges and equipment she will be dragging across the Arctic ice and lifting a large tyre to build her strength.

Mr Hawkins says: “We’re trying to get her as strong as possible with the aim of putting on some weight.

“Because she has a high metabolism it’s very hard to put on muscle very fast so it’s a long, slow process to try get to the optimum weight. If we make it as hard as possible now, she will be ready for the challenge. Doing these compound and complex movements prepares you for anything.”

Mrs Stancer is consuming 3,000 calories a day with a menu that includes toasted banana sandwiches and lots of chicken, venison and fish.

Every piece of equipment she carries must be multi-functional to minimise the weight of her luggage.

Mrs Stancer says: “Dental floss is brilliant for sewing or stitching if I cut myself. Vaseline is a brilliant protector for the skin but I also use it for servicing little parts of my stove. I don’t need water because I use snow for cooking, drinking, toothpaste, soap and as toilet paper.

“Every piece of equipment and kit has to be super light, strong and multi-functional because every gram counts.”
