A GIRL at Benson Primary School has been sent a thank-you letter from the Queen.

Scarlet Mountford, nine, drew a picture of Her Majesty as part of a school project to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee last year.

Her grandmother was so impressed she persuaded Scarlet to send the drawing to Buckingham Palace.

Now she has received a reply from Susan Hussey, one of the Queen’s ladies-in-waiting.

It reads: “The Queen wishes me to write and thank you for the letter and splendid picture which you sent at Christmas.

“Her Majesty liked your picture very much and greatly appreciated the care you have taken to draw it. The Queen sends you and your family her best wishes for 2013 and I am to thank you very much once again for writing as you did.”

Scarlet, who plans to frame the letter, said: “I was amazed when I saw it. My friends all said ‘wow’.”

It took her about half an hour to complete the drawing using colouring pencils.

Scarlet, who lives in Warborough, said: “We had lots of examples and we could choose what we would like to do. I tried to copy a picture.”

Her mother, Alison, said: “When Scarlet sent the picture she didn’t expect a reply, so the letter was a lovely surprise. It is something that she can treasure.”
