A PUB in Shiplake is to celebrate the old Empire Day tomorrow (Saturday).

The Plowden Arms will have live music, Morris dancing, Victorian-style amusement stalls and an Indian-themed barbecue.

Landlady Ruth Peters said the event would be more about celebrating multicultural Britain than the old Empire.

The purpose of the Empire Day, which started in 1902, was to remind children that they formed part of the British Empire and that its strength depended on them. It was renamed British Commonwealth Day in the Fifties.
