Belated birthday for Henley stalwart

A BELATED 80th birthday party was held for Tony Hobbs on Friday.

A BELATED 80th birthday party was held for Tony Hobbs on Friday.

Mr Hobbs, whose actual birthday is in March, and about 90 guests enjoyed a sit-down lunch on Temple Island accompanied by singer Rebecca Poole performing.

The guests included his wife Jackie and their three children and eight grandchildren. Mr Hobbs, who was the fourth member of his family to own Hobbs of Henley, travelled to the island with his family on the 100-year-old umpire launch Enchantress while the rest of the party travelled on The New Orleans.

The family had lots to celebrate as Mr Hobbs’ daughter, Melanie, had her birthday the following day while his other daughter, Katie, celebrates her silver wedding anniversary this year.

Mr Hobbs, who lives in Peppard, said: “Although my birthday was in March, we decided we didn’t want to go to Temple Island then because it wouldn’t be very nice. We were very lucky with the weather and I enjoyed the day very much thanks to the generosity of Henley Royal Regatta [which owns Temple Island].”

Hobbs of Henley is now run by Mr Hobbs’ son Jonathan but he remains part-time chairman of the company, which was started in 1870 by his great grandfather Harry.
