TV baker to open village show

FOOD writer and TV presenter Mary Berry will open Ewelme Village Show on Monday.

FOOD writer and TV presenter Mary Berry will open Ewelme Village Show on Monday.

The 78-year-old Great British Bake Off judge will also judge entries in the “Mary Berry challenge”, which is open to villagers.

Entrants have to bake an 8in, four egg Victoria sandwich and the winner will receive a cash prize and a signed copy of one of Berry’s cookery books.

The show, which is organised by Ewelme Horticultural Society, will take place at the recreation ground from 2pm.

Angela Harrison, who chairs the group, said the committee were thrilled that Berry had agreed to open the show.

She said her appearance should help boost both the number of entrants, which set a record last year, and visitors, which totalled more than 500 in 2012.

Mrs Harrison said: “I think people will come just because Mary Berry is here. It is going to be a busy afternoon and we might be inundated with people but that is what we want. We are just hoping the weather will be nice because we are usually very lucky.”

Show exhibits will include produce and crafts and some entries will be auctioned. The prize-giving ceremony will start at 4.15pm and last for about an hour.

Other attractions will include archery, children’s craft tent, classic cars and home-made teas. Music will be provided by Chinnor Silver Band.

The show organisers have also introduced a children’s craft tent with a range of activities. Entry to this will cost £1. Entry to the show costs 50p and parking is free.

Entry forms must be completed and taken to the address printed on the schedules by 1pm tomorrow (Saturday). Entries should be dropped off at the recreation ground by 10am on Monday.
