Former doctor’s receptionist celebrates 90th birthday

A WOMAN celebrated her 90th birthday with friends at a meeting of Sonning Common lunch club in the village hall.

A WOMAN celebrated her 90th birthday with friends at a meeting of Sonning Common lunch club in the village hall.

Betty Brindley, who lives with her husband Ron in Woodlands Road, shared a birthday cake made by a friend and took part in a raffle with more than 30 other members.

She said: “It was a very nice party with lovely company. We come here once a month and have a lot of friends here. Everyone is very friendly and the staff are great.”

Mrs Brindley, who was born in London, was married in 1951 and she and her husband owned a newsagents shop in Tooting.

The couple moved to Kidmore End in 1960 before moving to Sonning Common in 2000.

Mrs Brindley used to be a receptionist at Sonning Common Health Centre and said: “I like everything about Sonning Common — the people are friendly, the shops are good and it’s a nice environment.”

Her husband, a retired housing assistant with South Oxfordshire District Council, said: “We weren’t planning on staying in Kidmore End for long but ended up living there for 40 years. It’s a great community.”

Mr Brindley said his wife was “cheerful and helpful”, adding: “We’ve always got on very well together. We used to go dancing and had quite a social life.”

In 2000, he received an MBE for his services to the community, Mr Brindley used to drive for the Fish centre as well as volunteering at John’s Church in Kidmore End.

The lunch club meets on the second Wednesday of each month.
