The pulling power of an old-fashioned village fete

MORE than 200 braved the rain for the annual Remenham village fete.

Despite the clouds, villagers flocked to Remenham village hall for the event, which featured local produce stalls and games like tug-of-war.

A number of traditional fairground games were available for visitors, including coconut shy, hook the duck and bottle tombola.

There was also a raffle with prizes donated from local businesses and a WI stall selling tea and cakes.

The fete, on September 7, featured a dog show which was won by Rachael McHale and her dog Poppy.

More than £1,000 was raised at the fete, which will go towards maintaining the church and village hall.

Fete organiser Peter Grace said: “The rain clouds cleared away and we had a fantastic day. It’s a lovely village fete, a more old-fashioned event than other such fetes. I was surprised by the volume of people we had on the day. Everybody in the village likes coming to it. It’s not widely advertised, we only had two banners up, but it’s a real community event.

“The money raised comes back to the community and goes into anything the church or hall needs, including our centenary dinner.”
