Nominees announced for achievement awards

TEN inspirational women from the Henley area have been shortlisted for this year’s Sue Ryder Women of Achievement Awards.

TEN inspirational women from the Henley area have been shortlisted for this year’s Sue Ryder Women of Achievement Awards.

The seventh annual awards, which will be presented at a ceremony in Reading on Thursday, acknowledge the influence of women in the business, community, creative and sport fields.

Henley Rowing Club’s junior quad has been nominated for young achiever of the year.

Hattie Orr, Ellie Thompson, Maddie Orr, Lauren Edwards and cox Emma Lister won gold medals at all the major junior rowing events, including the British Junior National Rowing Championships where they broke the course record twice.

Singer Naomi Vallance, of Reading Road, Henley, and cabaret entertainer Maria Hackemann, from Caversham, have been nominated for performer of the year.

Penny Snowden, from Sonning Common, has been nominated for community champion of the year.

She set up On Your Bike in Sonning Common in 2007 to encourage safe and enjoyable cycling. The annual event has raised more than £15,000 for Sonning Common Primary School, the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust and the Sue Ryder hospice in Nettlebed.

Barbara Orpwood, from Sonning Common, has been nominated for teacher of the year. She had taught chemistry at Queen Anne’s School in Caversham for the past 22 years.

Yasmina Siadatan, who owns the Mya Lacarte restaurant in Caversham and won the BBC’s Apprentice programme, has been shortlisted for businesswoman of the year. The restaurant has been featured in both the Michelin Guide and the Good Food Guide.
