Vince Hill: Why I wear a poppy

I WEAR my poppy like most people do because it is an emblem and a reminder of the futility of war, and the thousands of men and women who gave their lives in the 1914—18 war and the thousands more who paid the ultimate price in the 1939-45 war plus the many more who have given their lives in Iraq, Afghanistan and other wars around the world since 1945.

I was born in Coventry in 1934 so of course I can remember the war quite well. As I’m sure a lot of readers know Coventry was flattened and blitzed by the German Luftwaffe on the night of November 14, 1940. After that a new word entered the English language — “Coventration”. It was remembered by our brave aircrews when they started bombing Germany: “This is for Coventry,” they said. So yes I wear my Poppy with pride. and I don’t forget all those brave people who gave their lives for us to be free in our Country…... SO FAR!
